Hawston Public Library, in Church (Kerk) Street, is the heart of reading and learning in Hawston and a hub for the nearby schools. Besides lending books it runs the long-standing Help to Read programme for struggling readers, holiday programmes with meals for around 200 children, weekly activities for seniors and people with disabilities, and CV, school-registration and SARS assistance. The Hawston Mini Library for the Blind, opened in March 2026 with the South African Library for the Blind, offers audiobooks, Daisy players and a reading machine, and the library also houses a Library Business Corner for local entrepreneurs. Winner of a Western Cape Cultural Award for Community Impact through Outreach. Membership is free for Overstrand residents (bring your ID and proof of address), and members can also borrow free e-books and audiobooks through the Libby app.
