Whales face growing ship-strike threat

Whales around southern Africa are facing a growing risk from ship strikes as vessel traffic increases. In four months, two Bryde’s whales, a humpback and a southern right whale died in collisions near the Cape. Scientists, government departments and conservation organisations are working together to understand the danger and identify solutions, including speed restrictions, route changes and improved detection. More research is urgently needed, particularly as humpback whales gather in feeding groups near approaches to Saldanha Bay and Cape Town.
