Temporary Closure of Hermanus and Zwelihle Taxi Ranks

The Hermanus and Zwelihle taxi ranks have been temporarily closed for 24 hours for safety reasons and to allow the situation to stabilise. The closure follows instructions from the South African Police Service (SAPS) after a shooting incident at the Zwelihle taxi rank earlier today, 23 September 2026.
Two people were killed and another person was injured in the incident.
An urgent application has been made to the MEC for Mobility in terms of Section 91 of the National Land Transport Act. Section 91 provides for extraordinary measures, which may include the closure of taxi ranks and routes where necessary to address public safety concerns.
A decision on any further measures will be taken after the 24-hour period, based on the situation at the time.
