Silt cuts dam capacity

Although De Bos Dam is virtually full, silt deposited during the 2024 floods has reduced its storage capacity from 5.8 million to 5.57 million kilolitres. With warmer, drier conditions predicted because of El Niño, Overstrand residents are urged to conserve water and follow garden-watering rules.
No restrictions currently apply, but residents may not irrigate between 09:00 and 17:00. The municipality is also exploring additional water sources, including new boreholes and a planned seawater desalination plant for Hermanus in the future.
