Overstrand firefighters claims podium finish at Toughest Firefighter Alive
Tuesday, 6 October 2026
Overstrand Municipality's firefighters put their strength, fitness and skills to the test at this year's Toughest Firefighter Alive (TFA) competition, held from 1 to 3 October 2026 in George.
The demanding competition included events such as pulling 75-metre hoses, dragging 80 kg dummies, tackling obstacles, climbing walls, carrying heavy loads and completing an 800-metre sprint, all against the clock while wearing full firefighting gear.
The event provided an opportunity for the Overstrand team to compete alongside firefighters from more than 30 municipalities across South Africa, as well as competitors from Botswana, while gaining valuable experience and testing themselves against some of the region's best.
The Overstrand mixed team, comprising Coleen Johnson, Willene Thompson, Tyrol MacKenzie and Cecil Abrahams, secured third place overall. Firefighter Jason Griffiths and Reservist Coleen Johnson also achieved third place in their respective age categories.
Overstrand's firefighters were assisted throughout the event by Kim Heneke, Taylo Swartz, Sarolyn Coert and Lucia Swartz, whose support helped ensure the team could focus on the challenges at hand.
Executive Mayor Alderman Archie Klaas congratulated team captain Tyrol MacKenzie, team manager team manager Ebriam Issacs, the firefighters and support crew on their participation and achievements.
"We are proud of every member of Team Overstrand who represented the municipality with dedication and professionalism. Competitions such as these highlight the fitness, teamwork and commitment required of firefighters every day. Overstrand Municipality is proud of its firefighters and their continued commitment to serving and protecting our communities," said Mayor Klaas.
