Monitors sound alarm over water

Residents in Fisherhaven have begun monitoring runoff entering the Bot River estuary and Bot Lagoon Ramsar system, with initial tests raising concerns about possible faecal contamination and chlorine.

The citizen science project, led by Stonefly Environmental Education with the homeowners’ association, aims to build a long-term picture of ecological health.

Organisers emphasise that the sample came from runoff entering the lagoon, not the lagoon itself, so it cannot determine overall lagoon water safety. Further investigation and ongoing monitoring are planned.
