Hawston struggle as Hermanus celebrate first win
Monday, 2 November 2026
Hawston Cricket Club’s search for their first Boland Premier League victory continued on Saturday after they suffered a 133-run defeat against Young Peoples at Daljosafat Oval in Paarl.
Meanwhile, Hermanus Cricket Club finally opened their account with a five-wicket win over Wellington at Sir Div Oval.
Hawston fall short again
After winning the toss and electing to field, Hawston struggled to contain Young Peoples’ opening pair, Haygen Hermanus and Devon Pietersen, who put on 68 runs before Giovanni Gillion broke the partnership.
Hawston briefly fought back, reducing the hosts to 91/3, but Clint Philander’s 42 off 69 balls and Clint Brockmann’s explosive 45 off 32 deliveries helped Young Peoples recover to 249/7 in their allotted 50 overs.
Kyle Philander was Hawston’s standout bowler, taking 2/28 in his 10 overs. In reply, openers Darreu Jansen and Dawid Gerber made a promising start with a 49-run partnership. However, Gerber’s dismissal by Reese Petersen triggered a collapse that Hawston could not recover from.
Jansen battled patiently for 41 off 116 deliveries, but with little support from the other end, Hawston were bowled out for 116, handing Young Peoples a convincing victory.
Hermanus break their duck
Hermanus produced an impressive all-round performance to secure their first win of the season in a 28-over encounter against Wellington.
After electing to bat, Wellington slumped to 28/6 as the home side’s bowlers ripped through their top order. Pieter Lombart and Kieran Dreyden then combined for a valuable 58-run partnership to revive the innings, but Wellington were eventually dismissed for 103.
Leighton Dennis led the bowling effort with an excellent 3/30 in 4.5 overs.
Hermanus suffered an early setback when Chalynn Hess fell for a golden duck, but Matthew Swart and Warren Davids steadied the chase with a crucial 73-run partnership.
Although Hermanus lost a few wickets late in the innings, Davids kept his composure, finishing unbeaten on 45 off 55 balls to guide the hosts to a five-wicket victory.
