The Marine Hotel
Hermanus's oldest hotel, on the cliff path over Walker Bay since 1902
The Marine is one of South Africa's most spectacular seaside hotels, perched on Hermanus's cliff path over Walker Bay. Built in 1902 as the town's first hotel (and the second-oldest building in Hermanus), it passed through several owners before hotelier Liz McGrath — known for restoring The Plettenberg and The Cellars-Hohenort — took it over in 1998, reopening it that October as a five-star hotel. It's now part of the Liz McGrath Collection and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
Rooms range from Double Rooms to 10 Premier Suites (two with private balconies), with dining at The Pavilion restaurant and The Sun Lounge and Bar, Carchele Beauty Spa on site, a gymnasium, swimming pools, a boutique shop, pet-friendly rooms and EV charging. Whale watching is a signature draw, often visible directly from sea-view bedrooms in season.
Awards include TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice every year 2014-2025, multiple Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice rankings, several Haute Grandeur Global Excellence Awards, and Diners Club Winelist Platinum Certificates 2014-2019.
