Rotary Way Lookout
A mountain drive above Hermanus with sweeping views of Walker Bay
A short sealed road climbs the mountain behind Hermanus to the Rotary Way Lookout, where a gravel car park looks out over the town, the whale-watching bay and the whole sweep of Walker Bay. On the way up there are stops for views of Sandbaai, Zwelihle and Vermont, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley running towards Caledon, and — from the final stretch — the Klein River Valley, Stanford, the lagoon, Hermanus Heights, the golf course, the New and Old Harbours and Gearing’s Point, one of the town’s main whale-watching points. Whales can be watched from the lookout between June and November, and it costs nothing to visit. Beyond the car park a gravel road carries on to a gate at the edge of the Hamilton Russell property, with a few benches about 110 m past it at the furthest point vehicles may reach; hang gliders launch along this stretch. To get there, drive about 2 km from Hermanus towards Cape Town, pass the Spar at Gateway Shopping Centre on your left, turn right into Malva Road and follow the Rotary Way signs. Please take care on the mountain, keep away from the radio towers (they are alarmed, with armed response), do not pick the plants and do not feed the baboons.
