The harbour Hermanus grew out of, conserved as an open-air museum. Historic fishing boats sit on the slopes above the slipway, alongside the original sea wall, the brine tanks and the bokkom stands where fish were dried. A plaque at the harbour records that fishermen from Herries Bay, near Hawston, settled here in the eighteen-fifties and built a fishing industry that ran for over a century. The harbour was declared a national monument in 1970 and the museum became a province-aided museum in 1972. Indoor displays cover the fishing industry, and there is an environmental education centre. One ticket also admits you to the Whale House Museum and De Wet’s Huis, both a short walk away in the Fishermen’s Village.
