Makiwa Modern is the Hermanus outpost of Makiwa Galleries, a small gallery group founded in 2014 by Zimbabwean-born artist Makiwa Mutomba, who left an engineering degree to paint full-time from 1999. His signature palette-knife technique spans portraits, wildlife and horse paintings and monochrome pieces, and the group has since expanded into bronze sculpture.
