Open since 1995 on Marine Drive, La Pentola is helmed by executive chef-owner Shane Sauvage — described as the father of South African fusion cuisine — serving fresh daily seafood, mature prime beef, game and vegetarian dishes with South African flavours. The house specialty is Hermanus abalone, locally cultivated and pan-fried with a choice of lemon-butter, Mozambican or Cape sauce.

It's an upstairs dining room with panoramic views over Walker Bay — birthing ground of the Southern Right Whale, with whale-watching from the tables in season. Seats around 90, with a popular long table for groups, a full license and an award-winning wine list heavy on Platter-rated South African labels. Chef Sauvage's accolades include 16 consecutive years of an American Express Platinum Fine Dining Award, a Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Blazon, a Diners Club Diamond wine-list award, and three international Gourmand Awards for his cookbooks. A portion of every bottle of the Chef's Shiraz sold goes to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary — over R100,000 raised to date.
