HPF1855 (Hermanuspietersfontein Wines)
Wines named entirely in Afrikaans, honouring the settler whose name became "Hermanus"
Closed Opens tomorrow at 10:00
HPF1855 — Hermanuspietersfontein Wines — takes its name from Hermanus Pieters, the Dutch teacher whose 1855-era settlement gave the town of Hermanus its name (later shortened by a postmaster because the full name was too long for his stamp). It's reportedly the only South African cellar to name its wines exclusively in Afrikaans — Bloos, Kaalvoet Meisie, Posmeester, Kleinboet, Skoonma, Swartskaap, Arnoldus — across Classic, Flagship and Icon ranges.
The tasting room sits at Hemel-en-Aarde Village, right at the start of the R320 wine route, though the grapes themselves are grown much further away, on the Sondagskloof farm the estate pioneered near Cape Agulhas — of its 350 hectares, 65 are under vine. The brand keeps a deliberately unpretentious, irreverent identity: "good wine, honest conversation, zero pretense."
