Fernkloof Nature Reserve covers 18 square kilometres of the Kleinrivier Mountains above Hermanus, ranging from sea level to 824m, with a 60km network of trails for walkers and hikers of all fitness levels. Though it makes up just 0.002% of the Cape Floral Kingdom’s area, it holds 18% of its plant species — more than 1,250 identified so far — alongside grey rhebok, klipspringer, baboon and the occasional Cape mountain leopard. Entry is free, and a flower display is maintained year-round at the Visitors’ Centre. Managed by the volunteer Hermanus Botanical Society, which also hires out the Fernkloof Hall and Galpin Hut for functions.
