Ataraxia Wines
Cool-climate wine at the highest point on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge
Closed Opens tomorrow at 09:00
Ataraxia — Greek for a serene state of mind, free from worry — was founded in 2004 when winemaker Kevin Grant and his wife Hanli, with a small group of friends, bought the 47-hectare Skyfields Farm at roughly 1,300 feet, the highest elevation in the Hemel-en-Aarde area. Kevin Grant trained at Elsenburg (graduating Dux) and makes regular harvest trips to France, Oregon, Australia and New Zealand; the estate is known for unoaked Sauvignon Blanc, wooded Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and red blends.
Tastings happen in "The Wine Lounge," a chapel-style building in Overberg vernacular architecture, widely regarded as one of the most dramatic tasting-room settings in the world, with sweeping views over vineyard, valley and mountain.
